The Arabic root “f-t-r” means to cleave, split, wean off, or render asunder. The Divine Name “al-Fatir” or “The Creator” is derived from this root; Shi’i mystical traditions also attribute the name of the Prophet’s daughter, Fatima, to the same linguistic origin, establishing Fatima as the very criterion through whom Allah distances His mercy from the unjust upon the earth. Meanwhile, Ali, Fatima’s husband, serves as an enactor of this justice. Together, they represent the paradigms of feminine and masculine not only in an earthly sense but as the metaphysical concepts of Allah’s Jamali (beautiful, expansive, loving-kind) and Jalali (majestic, overpowering, glorious) attributes. (“And We created you in pairs.” —Qur’an 78:8) Meanwhile, Allah’s central name represents the neutral, the unbound and ungendered Supreme, standing above this interplay of creative energy and pure consciousness as the cherubic Buraq—the steed of the Prophet—ascends towards (but never directly reaching) His station.

“Render Asunder” incorporates Islamic talismanic forms (naqsh) such as the buduh square, Loh-e-Qur’aani, and Sharaf as-Shams to evoke the familiar kitschiness of South Asian Islamicate print culture, further exemplified here through risograph printing. It is an inquiry into the mundane yet esoteric nature of “pop” devotional art present in dargahs, Ashur Khanas, the decorated walls of pre-Salafi grandmothers, pamphlets, Eid cards, and instructional booklets.

Risograph printing utilizes soy-based inks through a digital screen printing technique, where colors are layered individually. As a result, each print is unique, with marks, blemishes, and color differences. Please be aware of this before placing your order.
