Blue Madonna
During my honeymoon, as I sat along the shores of Laguna Beach, California, I phoned my Sufi mentor all the way across the ocean in Nagore, Tamil Nadu.
“I’m heading to Velankanni,” he mentioned, referring to the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health. “Sometimes when there’s far too much going on here at the dargah, I head to Nagore's coastline. But sometimes, when even that isn't enough, it is Annai Maryam I turn to as she sits overlooking the Velankanni Beach. There, the waves speak to all who approach her.”
That night, I left my hotel room and walked back down to the beach, a shawl over my shoulders and tasbih in hand. And despite being thousands upon thousands of miles away, I hoped Velankanni could see me and send her blue-black waves with a message of my own.
